Kingston Heath
Photographed over 2 visits on 14th & 17th November where one day was almost rained off. KHGC was an amazing course to start my brief Sandbelt visit. Much appreciation to my gracious host, Nick Heather for an unforgettable round of golf.
KHGC is one of the world’s finest golf courses and it is a masterful routing for what is a very gentle rolling track of land with a relatively small footprint of 125 acres.
The club dates back to 1909 and to 1920 in its current location. Designed by the very accomplished golfer, Dan Soutar – Dr. Alister MacKenzie was recruited to redesign the bunkering. MacKenzie’s only contribution to the routing was to shorten the then par 4 15th to a par 3 and it remains to this day, one of the finest par 3s on the Sandbelt.
Mick Morcom of RMGC fame constructed Kingston Heath and his son Vernon Morcom remained at Kingston Heath from 1928 until 1967.
While MacKenzie’s contribution is debated, it is beyond doubt that the bunkering was replicated and mimicked throughout the Sandbelt. Tom Doak notes that the bunkering at Kingston is what took it from good to great.
