Victoria Golf Club
Victoria Golf Club dates back to 1903 and was established at Fishermen’s Bend by Billy Meader and a group of local influential businessmen.
The club relocated to its current location on Cheltenham Road in 1926 and was routed by Billy Meader and Oscar Damman. They sought out help from the Good Doctor (Alister MacKenzie) who was working on the adjacent Royal Melbourne in providing the finishing touches in a way not too dissimilar to nearby Kingston Heath.
My visit was 2 weeks shy of the 2022 ISPS Handa Australian Open and the course was in fantastic condition. I was accompanied by Captain Stephen Ager and legendary designer, Mike Clayton who played a huge role in restoring Victoria GC.
The tour of the clubhouse and mapping topped off an incredible visit. Much gratitude to Captain Ager for being a gracious and informative host and also to all round top class gent, Mike Clayton for imparting so much design wisdom given his extensive restorative works on Victoria over the years.
