The East Course By Alex Russell

Having played Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club in New Zealand, I anticipated treacherous green complexes with plenty of run off areas. Cross/Diagonal bunker complexes on 10 and 17 added to the strategic approach with which, designer, Alex Russell compels golfers to plot their way around his course.

I played and walked the East Course over 2 days for the photo gallery. It was thoroughly enjoyable and allowed me to get a feel for the terrain before playing my penultimate round of the Southern Hemisphere,  the West Course.

Alex Russell, was very clearly a quick study as his time with the Good Doctor was brief but he assimilated so much wisdom. Russell was a very proficient as a golfer so that combined with time spent with Dr. MacKenzie lead to some great design work.

While resting in the shadow of its sister course, the West – anyone lucky enough to visit the Sandbelt, should make sure they play the East Course as it allows a visitor to fully comprehend the tremendous output of Head Greenskeeper, Mick Morcom’s work ethic as well as Alex Russell’s meticulous eye for detail in both learning from MacKenzie as well as implementing and executing MacKenzie’s Principles.
