Dr. Alister MacKenzie
A medical doctor turned golf course architect. MacKenzie’s ideas and design thoughts continue to stand the test of time after the best part of a century. With more than 50 courses designed, 3 of those remain exemplary course designs ranking within the Top 10 in the world – Augusta National Golf Club, Cypress Point Club and Royal Melbourne Golf Club (West Course).
Background
Jason is a proud member of Cork Golf Club since 2005. Cork GC was established in 1888. It was redesigned by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1925 and it exhibits many of his design philosophies and principles.
In 1995, Cork Golf Club joined the Alister MacKenzie Society which brings together 15 of MacKenzie’s most renowned course designs.
Following an invitation to participate in the 2022 MacKenzie Gathering in Titirangi Golf Club, Auckland, New Zealand – Jason decided to embark on a journey to retrace MacKenzie’s footsteps and visit as many of his designs as possible.
The MISSION
In both researching Dr. Alister MacKenzie and visiting his famous courses, the end goal will be to produce a golf enthusiast’s travel log.
With 2025 looming as being the centenary year of MacKenzie’s redesign of Cork Golf Club, we can think of no better target to aim for completion of the first book. The proceeds of all resulting works will go directly to various charities.
We have some great ideas of various activities both golf and non-golf related that will raise funds for some terrific charitable causes in the short term too!
